The singers of British Youth Opera (BYO) come to the Peacock for their annual season from 7-15 September, with productions of Mozart’s The Magic Flute and Benjamin Britten’s Albert Herring.
The Magic Flute, translated into English by Jeremy Sams, tells the story of young lovers Tamino and Pamina, who must face a series of trials to prove their love and achieve a happy future together, helped by spiritual leader Sarastro and legendary bird-catcher Papageno. Albert Herring is the comic tale of a young man breaking free from his inhibitions, the limitations of village life, and his mother.
Based at London South Bank University, British Youth Opera was founded in 1987 to give young, pre-professional opera singers, musicians and technical trainees the chance to rehearse and perform in a professional arena. An annual programme of workshops, masterclasses and professional development culminates in the annual visit to the Peacock, where BYO stages two operas, accompanied by its resident orchestra, the Southbank Sinfonia.
