Trafalgar Studio 2’s spring 2008 season has been announced and is brimming with new shows for the London stage. Among the productions are the award-winning comedy Angry Young Man, playing in a double bill with the world premiere of The Explorer, Michael Pennington in Shakespeare bio-play Sweet William, Daily Telegraph Edinburgh tip World’s End, new play Snowbound and Athol Fugard’s Hello And Goodbye.
Ben Woolf’s Angry Young Man, which follows an Eastern European surgeon searching for a new life in London, was named Best Play at the Adelaide Fringe Festival 2006. At the Trafalgar Studio 2 it plays as part of a double bill with Woolf’s new play The Explorer, a story of mystery, deceit and adventure. Both plays are performed each night by MahWaff Theatre Company between 8 January and 2 February.
Sweet William is both devised and performed by veteran actor Pennington, who draws on his many years of experience across the West End and the UK to create a piece celebrating the life and work of William Shakespeare. Sweet William follows Angry Young Man/The Explorer from 4-16 February.
At the 2007 Edinburgh Festival, World’s End (20 February-8 March) was named as one of the Daily Telegraph’s top 10 shows. Written by Paul Sellar, it follows Kat, who is moving out of the flat she shares with her ex-boyfriend Ben. But Ben still loves her…
Ciaran McConville’s Snowbound runs from 12 March-19 April, telling of two brothers, Tom and Alex, who have always had to look after themselves. When Tom’s wife dies only Alex can make his world work again. Snowbound is presented by McConville’s Debut Theatre Company, which has also performed at the Edinburgh Festival and at London’s Etcetera, Courtyard and King’s Head theatres.
The season is completed by South African playwright Fugard’s Hello And Goodbye (22 April-17 May). The dramatic tale is set in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, where Johnny is alone at the family home when a stranger arrives. In one tense and desperate night a sibling reunion evokes powerful childhood memories as buried secrets are unearthed.
Currently playing at the Trafalgar Studio 2 is Some Kind Of Bliss, starring Lucy Briers, which is followed for the Christmas season by Potted Potter: The Unauthorised Harry Experience.
