Tell Us In Ten: Sara Hazemi

By Jennifer Dickson-Purdy First Published 27 September 2024, Last Updated 8 November 2024

In our profile series Tell Us In Ten, we ask cast members and creatives of top London shows to tell us all about themselves in just 10 questions. From how they caught the acting bug to their proudest career moment so far, we want to know everything!

This week we caught up with Sara Hazemi, starring in the new production of Oedipus – playing from 4 October to 4 January at Wyndham’s Theatre.

1. My route into theatre was…

I have vivid memories of seeing certain productions on school trips and having a gut feeling that acting is what I wanted to do. It felt unrealistic so I tried to ignore it, but once I got to university I found myself falling down a rabbit of hole of amateur dramatics and it spiralled from there. After a lot emails and some luck here I am!

2. My West End idol is…

I’d probably say Patsy Ferran – I’ve seen her in a few productions and each time she’s utterly magnetic.

3. My colleagues would describe me as…

I’d like to hope it would be something along the lines of kind, motivated and funny, though you’d have to ask them!

4. My favourite show is…

I’m not sure I can choose a favourite but something brilliant I saw recently was The Years at the Almeida Theatre.

5. The career moment I’m most proud of is…

This year I was lucky enough to work on a production of English at the Kiln Theatre with the Royal Shakespeare Company. It was with the most brilliant team of people – and a production that meant a lot personally. To perform a Pulitzer Prize-winning play was an honour.

6. The hardest part about my job is…

The instability can be taxing at times, but it’s worth it when the stars align and you get to work on something really special.

7. If I wasn’t an actor, I would be…

A writer or director, but outside the industry I reckon I’d be a therapist.

8. Something people don’t know about me is…

I truly can’t think of something people don’t know about me that I can publish, so you’ll have to use your imagination I’m afraid!

9. The best piece of advice I’ve ever been given is…

If you don’t ask you don’t get – within reason, it’s always worth a shot.

10. The one thing I wish I could tell my younger self is…

Don’t take it all too seriously.

Oedipus opens at Wyndham’s Theatre next week – find out more about the sold-out production at Official London Theatre.
