With breathtaking singing and movement techniques, Poland’s most exciting avant-garde company draws on a rich tradition of lamentations in this award-winning exploration of the music that divides life and death.
This hauntingly beautiful ensemble piece centres on an ancient Sumerian epic inscribed on stone tablets over 5,000 years ago. Fragments of these have been unearthed and tell the story of Gilgamesh the king who is part man, part god. The company sing the lamentation of the king’s death, creating a wall of polyphonic sound to accompany their highly physical pursuits of such astonishing precision it makes mockery of gravity. Their song becomes a lament for every death the world has ever known, and for the death we will all face.
