Academy Award-winner Cuba Gooding Jr will make his British stage debut as wily lawyer Billy Flynn in the West End return of Chicago this Spring.

The Boyz N The Hood, The People v O. J. Simpson and Jerry Maguire (Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor) star will take on the role of slick and smooth-talking Flynn when the multi-award winning and internationally touring musical arrives at the Phoenix Theatre on Monday 26 March.

The actor made his Broadway theatre debut in 2013 alongside Cicely Tyson and Vanessa Williams in the Tony Award-nominated production of The Trip To Bountiful, and will now tread the West End boards for the first time.

Returning after a 5½-year absence from London, the inbound production of Chicago was the winner of six Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards and a Grammy, and now welcomes Gooding Jr, with further casting to be announced.

Set in prohibition Chicago, the show tells the story of two rival performers – and murderesses – locked up in the same County Jail, and satirises corruption within the criminal justice system. Expect sexy, sassy and dangerously seductive songs, dance and events to unfold.

Chicago originally ran in London for 15 years, making it the West End’s longest running revival. It first opened at the Adelphi Theatre on 18 November 1997 to rave reviews and immediately became a sell-out hit, winning the 1998 Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Musical Production. After several transfers amongst theatres, it departed the West End in September 2012.
