Henry’s horrid at the Trafalgar Studios

Published 28 October 2008

Horrid Henry, the naughty youngster from the popular children’s book series, will spread his mischief over London when Horrid Henry – Live And Horrid! opens at the Trafalgar Studios on 21 November.

Horrid Henry is a tantrum-throwing, practical joke playing little boy, who dreams about becoming king of the world. Often in trouble with his parents and teacher Miss Battle-Axe, he hates Perfect Pete, his goodie two shoes brother who always eats his vegetables, his smelly-nappy baby brother, and anyone else who tries to ruin his fun. Also featuring his best friend Rude Ralph and arch enemy Moody Margaret, Horrid Henry – Live And Horrid! brings to life his adventures on stage for the first time, complete with original song, music and dance.

Horrid Henry began life as a fictional character in the book by Francesca Simon in 1993. Since then, the series has become a publishing phenomenon selling over 12 million books in the UK. The books are sold in over 27 countries worldwide, often appearing on bestseller lists. In October 2006, Horrid Henry made his screen debut in an animated series on CITV. Achieving record ratings for the children’s channel, 52 episodes were shown with a further 52 promised for the second series which is due to air February 2009.

Horrid Henry – Live And Horrid! has been adapted for the stage from Simon’s books by John Godber. Artistic Director of Hull Truck Theatre Company since 1984, Godber has written numerous plays but this will be his family show debut. His previous work includes Blood, Sweat And Tears, Teechers, the Laurence Olivier Award-winning Up ‘N’ Under and Bouncers.

Direction comes from Hannah Chissick. Artistic Director of Harrogate Theatre, Chissick has directed many productions for the theatre including Ghosts, Ain’t Misbehavin and Steaming which was staged in Harrogate’s Turkish Baths. Her work in London includes Side By Side By Sondheim at The Venue and the smash-hit Boeing Boeing at the Comedy theatre, for which she was the associate director.

Horrid Henry’s original score is by Lester Barnes, who also created the music for the TV series. Set design comes from Pip Leckenby and lighting design is by Richard G Jones.

Horrid Henry – Live And Horrid! plays until 11 January at Trafalgar Studio 1.
