Iain Glen leaves Fortune’s Fool

Published 8 January 2014

Iain Glen has left the Old Vic production of Fortune’s Fool following doctor’s advice. He is to be replaced by Royal Shakespeare Company regular William Houston.

While Houston rehearses the role, the part of Kuzovkin will be played by Glen’s understudy Patrick Cremin.

A statement on the Old Vic’s website reads: “Everyone at the Old Vic wish Iain a speedy recovery and thank William for stepping into the role at short notice.”

Star of Game Of Thrones, Prisoners’ Wives and numerous stage productions, most recently Hampstead Theatre’s Longing, Glen had opened in Ivan Turgenev’s Russian satire in December, appearing opposite Richard McCabe and Alexander Vlahos in the tale of newlyweds who receive a shock at a celebratory lunch thrown to welcome them to their country estate.

His replacement, Houston, has previously played the title roles in RSC productions of Coriolanus, Sejanus, Henry V and Troilus And Cressida. His screen credits include Clash Of The Titans and Sherlock Holmes.

The Lucy Bailey-directed production continues to run at the Old Vic until 22 February. Following the conclusion of its run the auditorium will be reconfigured into an in-the-round space to stage the UK premiere of Other Desert Cities.
