Following last year’s revelation that the original London production of Les Misérables – the longest-running musical in the West End – will be moving to allow for renovations, plans for the West End theatre switch have been confirmed.

Heading into its revolutionary 34th year, the show will continue at the Queen’s Theatre until 13 July 2019. It will then move down Shaftesbury Avenue to the Gielgud Theatre for a four-month season from the end of July, whilst rebuilding work is underway.

Les Misérables will subsequently reopen at the restored Queen’s Theatre in December 2019 with the New production, created for the show’s 25th UK Anniversary in 2009; bookings will open next month.

The rebuilding work will allow for much-needed backstage and auditorium renovations, as well as the addition of new lavatories to the front of house, and the restoration of the theatre’s original boxes and loges.

The news comes at the culmination of a brilliant 33rd year for Les Misérables, having enjoyed a record-breaking Christmas season in the West End, as well as the opening of a nationally touring production.

Cameron Mackintosh said “I am continually amazed that Les Mis, in its fourth decade, continues to break new ground and new records.

“The show’s astonishing success is tribute to the story’s power to move and inspire which is at the heart of both the original novel and the musical. Tomorrow will always come for Les Mis!”
