A trio of talented youngsters will join the cast of Matilda The Musical this March to play the hit London show’s title heroine.
Zaris-Angel Hator, Clare Read and Emily-May Stephenson will alternate the role alongside current Matilda Evie Hone in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s deliciously mischievous and magical production from 15 March at the Cambridge Theatre.
Matilda The Musical is now in its fifth year wowing London audiences with Tim Minchin and Dennis Kelly’s witty adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic. The girls will follow in the footsteps of dozens of youngsters who have taken on the role of a child who discovers she is rather more special than her revolting parents believe, including the three original London Matildas who broken Olivier Award records to become the youngest ever recipients of a Best Actress in a Musical Award in 2012.
Their joint win is not the only Olivier Award record the show has broken, with Matilda The Musical becoming the most successful musical ever in the history of the prestigious prizes with the Matthew Warchus-directed show winning a staggering seven Olivier Awards in total following its five star premiere.
The casting news comes at an exciting time for the show, with 2016 marking the centenary year of much-loved children’s author Dahl.
To celebrate, the show will feature in the Southbank Centre’s forthcoming Imagine Children’s Festival, which runs from 10 to 21 February. On 18 February audience members will have the chance to watch the entirety of Dahl’s novel Matilda read aloud by special guests and members of the public. The cast will also be on hand to perform a song in the venue’s Clore Ballroom where festival goers will be treated to a unique installation inspired by the show’s Olivier Award-winning set.
Matilda The Musical fans will also have the rare chance to see backstage photos from the show and take a close-up look at Howell’s costume sketches and set model box as part of the much-anticipated Curtain Up experience at the V&A. The celebration of theatre in both London and New York runs from 9 February as part of a year of events marking the 40th anniversary of the Olivier Awards.
