Opening Night: The Toxic Avenger

First Published 5 October 2017, Last Updated 5 October 2017

London’s going green for bizarre-love-story meets comedy-shlock-horror musical The Toxic Avenger – we spoke to its cast and creatives at press night, including Joe DiPietro and David Bryan, the minds behind Memphis.

And having witnessed the exploits of the titular toxic superhero on opening night, we can certainly agree with Director Benji Sperring’s summary: hilarious, glorious anarchy is back in the West End, and you’ll love it.

Based on Lloyd Kaufman’s cult 1984 comedy schlock-horror film of the same name, The Toxic Avenger tells the story of the citizens of Tromaville, who are crying out for a hero… Enter nerdy Melvin Ferd the Third, an aspiring earth scientist, determined to clean up the state’s major toxic waste problem.

But when a corrupt Mayor and her government goons get wind of his plans, they vow to stop this heroic feat. Melvin is attacked and tossed into a vat of toxic waste… transforming him instantly into The Toxic Avenger, New Jersey’s first superhero!

Prepare to laugh, scream and dance at the Arts Theatre in this strictly limited season.
