Star of the stage and screen Romola Garai will play The Writer, the titular role of Ella Hickson’s new play at the Almeida Theatre.

Garai, who is perhaps best known for her roles in the films Atonement, Suffragette and The Last Days On Mars, returns to the London theatre scene, following her portrayal of the Duchess of Marlborough in Theatre Royal Haymarket’s play Queen Anne last year.

The play centres on an eponymous writer who wants to change the shape of the world. But a new way of thinking needs a new story – what can she do to make herself heard?

The Writer also marks a return for popular playwright Hickson to the Almeida, where she penned hit play Oil in 2016. Her previous works include Merlin, Wendy And Peter Pan, and Boys.

The production will be directed by Blanche McIntyre, and plays from Saturday 14 April – Saturday 26 May, with a press night on Tuesday 24 April. It is part of the Almeida’s recently-announced 2018 spring/summer season, which is set to feature female playwrights prominently.

Tickets can be purchased through the Almeida Theatre website.
