Roxana Silbert named new Hampstead Theatre Artistic Director

By Robin Johnson Published 20 November 2018

Roxana Silbert will become the new Artistic Director and Joint Chief Executive of Hampstead Theatre next year, it has been announced.

Making the move from Birmingham Repertory Theatre, where she has served as Artistic Director since 2012, Roxana will join the Hampstead Theatre from spring 2019, with her first season due to commence in September. The line-up will kick-start Hampstead’s 60th birthday celebrations from that month.

She said of her appointment: “Hampstead Theatre is where I fell in love with new plays. When I first arrived in London from a city with no producing theatre and a school with no drama department, I had very little experience of theatre. I saw every production there for the first five years of my London life, usually more than once. My first job was as a Hampstead script reader.

“My career as director of new plays is almost entirely due to Hampstead Theatre. It is very dear to my heart – so to be its new Artistic Director is just wonderful.”

Previously an Associate Director of the RSC and Artistic Director of Paines Plough Theatre Company, Roxana’s hit productions includes Woyzeck, Amèdee and The King’s Speech at Birmingham Repertory Theatre.

Roxana will lead the theatre alongside Greg Ripley-Duggan, Hampstead’s Executive Producer and Joint Chief Executive since 2010.
