Tara celebrates Japanese star festival

First Published 13 August 2009, Last Updated 13 August 2009

Tara Arts is inviting children and families to learn about Japan’s Tanabata Star Festival from 26 to 29 August.

Tanabata is an annual festival which celebrates the legend of stars Hikoboshi and Orihime, who fall in love. Separated by the Milky Way, they are only allowed to meet once a year, on the seventh day of the seventh month, according to the Japanese lunisolar calendar, which this year falls on 26 August.

Tara Arts’s Tanabata Star Festival is a storytelling performance which aims to capture this tale of love and fragility. Children will learn the Tanabata song and make a wish to hang on a bamboo tree.

The performance is directed by Tara Arts’s Artistic Director, Jatinder Verma, whose production of Hanif Kureishi’s The Black Album is currently playing at the National Theatre, and developed with Tara’s international associate artist Nanako Kume.

Tanabata Star Festival is suitable for children aged four to eight and their families. Performances take place at Tara Arts’s studio on Garratt Lane, South London. For more information visit www.tara-arts.com
