The Glass Menagerie receives West End transfer

First Published 21 October 2016, Last Updated 25 October 2016

John Tiffany, who recently directed Harry Potter And The Cursed Child to critical and audience acclaim, will bring his smash-hit production of Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie to the West End for a limited early 2017 season.

The interpretation of the classic play, which opened at the American Repertory Theater in 2013 and went on to perform a multi Tony Award-nominated season on Broadway, will begin previews at the Duke Of York’s Theatre on 26 January 2017, where it will play for 13 weeks.

Transferring with the production will be Cherry Jones and Michael J. Smith, who both received Tony Award nominations for starring in the central roles of Amanda Wingfield and the Gentleman Caller respectively. Michael Esper (Tom) and Kate O’Flynn (Laura) will also return to the show, having performed in its European premiere at the Edinburgh International Festival earlier this year.

The play tells the story of former Southern Belle Amanda Wingfield, who desperately seeks to find a husband for her fragile daughter Laura, while her son Tom dreams of escaping from their faded 1930s St. Louis home. Will the delicate dreams of the family be fulfilled or shattered by the entrance of the long-awaited ‘gentleman caller’?

The Duke Of York’s Theatre will also be transformed into the waning St Louis of the 1930s by a multi-Olivier and Tony Award-winning creative team, led by director John, and including movement by the Steven Hoggett (Harry Potter And The Cursed Child), design by Bob Crowley, lighting design by Natasha Katz, music by composer Nico Muhly and sound design by Paul Arditti.

The production will follow the run of beloved war-time drama The Dresser at the St Martin’s Lane venue, which stars Ken Stott and Reece Shearsmith.
